As Fan Week kicks off at the 2022 US Open, those in attendance might notice some striking new “visitors” at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Thanks to a recent partnership between The Armory Show and the USTA, the Armory Off-Site at the US Open showcases a collection of interactive artworks from contemporary artists. The pieces—by esteemed creators including Gerald Chukwuma, Jose Davila, and Luzene Hill—originally appeared across New York City from September through December 2021.
“This joint venture brings a piece of The Armory Show to the tournament and its visitors, promising to spark important conversations around the dynamic works on view,” said Nicole Berry, Executive Director of The Armory Show. “Armory Off-Site at the US Open further elevates September as the pivotal cultural moment for international audiences to be in New York City.”
The collaboration builds on the groundwork laid over the last two years by the USTA’s ‘Be Open’ campaign, which first utilized video clips of iconic tennis stars who used their platforms to promote social progress, and its companion art installations titled "Black Lives to the Front," and "Open Canvas." Similarly, Off-Site at the US Open organizers aim to push cultural boundaries with sculptures created by largely underrepresented artists from unique backgrounds.
